About Duxbury Designs

Duxbury Designs is run by UK based textile artist Katie Duxbury. She designs and makes all her own products, so you can be assured that everything you see on this site has been handmade with love in the North of England- no long distance shipping and underpaid factories will ever be involved at Duxbury Designs!

Theatrical Costuming

Katie is a graduate of Nottingham Trent University's Theatre Design Degree. Since then she has freelanced in theatrical wardrobe departments across the country, in roles ranging from Costume Maker and Dresser to Wardrobe Supervisor. She has worked primarily for The Dukes in Lancaster, but has also worked for Oldham Coliseum, The Aldwych in London, Lichfield Garrick, and for many other companies, individuals, and productions.

The work Katie has undertaken in theatre has provided her with a strong grounding in the skills and techniques of costume making, but what she loves most is to dream up and fulfill her own designs.

Inspiration

Many sources of inspiration are blended into the work of Duxbury Designs, including a love of colour, texture, and the enjoyment of exploring both historical and imagined garment shapes. Katie is drawn to the beautiful surrounding areas near her base in Morecambe. The Lake District, Morecambe Bay and the Lune Valley have provided her with inspiration during her frequent adventures on foot and bicycle.

Environmentally Concious

Katie has been working over recent years to make her creative practice more environmentally aware. This has meant stepping away from creating 'showpiece' costume using new-bought synthetic materials, and to carry forward only those aspects of her art which focus on found or waste materials, such as metal bottle caps (pictured above), broken tents and boat sails (pictured below).

In addition to dressmaking, Katie creates a range of unique accessories and fabric products. These are made of fabric that is leftover or upcycled from previous jobs, commissions and projects. These make great gifts and presents for the ethically concious buyer.
